What is a Bitaxe, exactly?

A Bitaxe is a small Bitcoin miner with open hardware and open firmware (AxeOS), built for a desk, a shelf or a homelab rather than a mining farm. A single ASIC does the hashing, an ESP32 controller runs the browser interface. You enter pool and Bitcoin address yourself – no provider settles anything on your behalf. Does home mining pay off financially?

As a predictable investment: no. At typical electricity prices a home device earns less than it consumes, purely on the maths. What you get instead is a ticket in every draw – if your device finds a block, the full reward goes to your address – plus heat in the room and a device that helps secure the network. If you are after a return, this is the wrong hobby; if you want to understand Bitcoin and take part, it is the right one. Run your own numbers in the mining calculator.

How much electricity do these miners use?

It depends heavily on the model: the small single-chip devices sit in the low tens of watts, a NerdQaxe++ around 80 W, a NerdOctaxe about 200 W. Practically all of that leaves the device as heat – welcome in winter, an argument for another room in high summer. Concrete costs are in calculating electricity.

Do I need technical knowledge?

No. Setup runs through a web interface: enter your Wi-Fi, add pool and Bitcoin address, done – a few minutes, no PC skills and no command line. If you want to go deeper later, frequency, voltage and fan curve are all adjustable. The setup guide shows every step with screenshots.

Solo mining or a pool – which makes more sense?

A pool pays small shares regularly, though with a home device those shares are tiny. Solo mining pays nothing almost all of the time – and the entire block reward in the rare event of a hit. For most home miners solo is the more honest option, because it treats the thing as what it is: a lottery with very good side effects. The solo mining guide puts both in context.

How loud is a miner in a living space?

The small models with a 40 mm fan are audible in a quiet room but unobtrusive; from the 4.8 TH/s class upwards a device is clearly present and does not belong in a bedroom. The fan curve in AxeOS lowers the level at the cost of temperature headroom. What actually helps is in making a Bitaxe quieter.

What do I need besides the miner itself?

A socket, a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and your own Bitcoin address. Power supply and stand are included with our devices, and no extra PC or Raspberry Pi is needed – AxeOS runs on the miner itself. Hardware only comes into play once you want to mine against your own node; the node guide covers that.

How do I keep the firmware up to date?

Easiest through our web flasher: pick the device, plug in the cable, install – with the checkbox set, Wi-Fi, pool and Bitcoin address stay intact. Alternatively download the update files and apply them in AxeOS under System. Whether an update is worth it at all is covered in the update guide.
