An AxeOS update is one of those maintenance jobs that becomes relevant on a Bitaxe sooner or later. New versions can fix bugs, improve stability or bring extra features. At the same time an update is not an end in itself. Clicking without preparation risks unnecessary downtime, lost settings or simply confusion after the restart.
In home mining in particular, a pragmatic approach makes sense. A Bitaxe should run reliably, be configured comprehensibly and, if in doubt, get back online quickly. That is exactly why a structured update process beats trial and error.

Why an AxeOS update can make sense at all
On a Bitaxe, firmware is not just „software in the background“. It controls the behaviour of the device very directly: the interface, the connection to the pool, how measurements are displayed and in part how certain settings or safety mechanisms are handled. A new version can therefore be relevant in several areas:
- Bug fixes: faults in the display, network behaviour or operating logic get corrected.
- Compatibility: new or changed functions in the interface are supported.
- Improved stability: some versions run more robustly in certain setups than older builds.
- New options: depending on the release, extra settings or detail readouts are added.
The other direction matters too, though: not every update gives you an immediate practical benefit day to day. If your miner runs stably, it can be sensible to wait for the release notes and the first reports. In home mining, reliability is usually worth more than the reflex to install the newest version.
Before the update: the most important preparations
1. First check whether you really need the update
The first question should not be „how do I update?“ but „why am I updating at all?“ A sensible update has a clear reason, for example:
- a reproducible fault in your current version,
- a feature you specifically want to use,
- indications of improvements in stability or compatibility,
- or a cleanly documented release that suits your device.
If your Bitaxe has been running stably for weeks with suitable temperatures, the expected hash rate and a clean pool connection, „new is new“ is not a strong argument on its own.
2. Note down your current settings
Before every firmware update you should assume that settings may have to be entered again. That mainly includes:
- the pool URL and port,
- worker or wallet details,
- frequency and voltage values, if you are not working in the standard range,
- network settings or particularities of your home network.
It is best to take screenshots of the important AxeOS pages or note the values in a short text file. It costs two minutes and can save far more time later.
3. Make sure power and network are stable
A firmware flash should not happen in the middle of a shaky setup. Avoid updates when:
- your Wi-Fi is currently unstable,
- you are using a problematic USB power supply,
- the miner is running at borderline temperatures,
- or you are changing several things about the setup at the same time.
A clean update process means one variable at a time. If you change the power supply, the pool, the frequency and the firmware in parallel, you will hardly be able to attribute faults afterwards.
4. Use the right firmware source
Only download firmware from sources you can verify. With open-source projects the project page or the official repository is the first address. For Bitaxe and AxeOS information the project GitHub presence is usually the factually right starting point, not some mirror or forum upload.

Even though Bitaxe is open and community-driven: a firmware file from an unclear source has no place on hardware you rely on.
How to approach a Bitaxe update in a structured way
Step 1: record the current state
Before you change anything, briefly document the starting point:
- Is the miner running stably?
- Roughly what are the hash rate, the temperature and the error values?
- Is the pool connection clean?
- Which AxeOS version is currently installed?
You need those values for comparison after the update. Without a before-and-after picture it is hard to say whether a problem is really new or was there beforehand.
Step 2: read the release information
Many problems arise not during the flash itself but because users cannot place the changes in a new version. So before updating, read whatever is available on:
- which changes are included,
- whether there are known limitations,
- whether certain settings should be checked after the update,
- and whether the version explicitly suits your hardware revision.
With community-driven hardware in particular: documentation can be good, but it is not always foolproof. A quick look beforehand prevents a lot of unnecessary troubleshooting.
Step 3: run the update – without rushing
The flash itself is usually the easiest part. What matters is not risking anything unnecessary while it runs:
- do not frantically reload the browser tab,
- do not disconnect the device from power,
- do not make further configuration changes in parallel,
- and give the miner a little time after the restart.
If a device is not immediately visible again after an update, that is not yet evidence of a fault. Sometimes the network reconnect or the initialisation simply takes a bit longer than expected.
Step 4: check specific things after the restart
After the update you should not only look at whether „something is running“ but check systematically:
- Is the expected AxeOS version shown?
- Are the pool and wallet details entered correctly?
- Are the frequency and voltage values still right?
- Does the miner reach its usual hash rate cleanly?
- Do temperatures and error values stay in a plausible range?
This is exactly where your notes pay off. An apparently „worse update“ is often just a reset or different setting in practice.
Common problems after an AxeOS update
The pool no longer connects
This is one of the most common cases. Check the obvious points first:
- Is the pool address correct?
- Is the port correct?
- Are the wallet and worker entered cleanly?
- Does the Bitaxe have a network connection?

The hash rate looks lower than before
A lower hash rate right after an update does not have to mean the firmware is worse. Common causes are:
- reset tuning values,
- changed display intervals,
- temporary stabilisation after the restart,
- or thermal behaviour that was already borderline in everyday use.
Do not compare a single value two minutes in; watch the device over a sensible period. Individual spikes say little in mining; a stable trend matters more than a pretty number in the first moment.
Settings appear to have vanished
That is exactly why documenting before the update pays off. If values are missing or have jumped back to defaults, it is annoying but usually not a disaster. Enter the known parameters cleanly again and then test. Avoid setting several aggressive tuning steps at once while you do.
When it is better not to update straight away
A cautious approach is often the more sensible choice in home mining. Postpone an update if one of these applies:
- Your setup is currently running stably and without trouble.
- You cannot calmly reconfigure the miner right now if something goes wrong.
- The new version has just been released and there is little experience with it yet.
- You specifically depend on the setup right now for a test, a demo or a comparison.
Open-source hardware lives on development speed. For users that does not mean putting every new version into production immediately, though. A small delay is often the less stressful decision.
Best practices for clean Bitaxe maintenance in the long run
- Log your changes: a short changelog for your own setup is worth its weight in gold.
- Change one thing at a time: update first, then test, and only then tune.
- Read measurements in context: hash rate alone is not enough; temperature and error values belong with it.
- Do not follow every hype: stability beats activism.
- Prefer official sources: only get firmware where the origin and the version are verifiable.
If you treat your miner not as a tinkering project but as a deliberately maintained home mining setup, this routine will save you a lot of frustration.
Conclusion: a good AxeOS update is above all a clean update
A Bitaxe AxeOS update is normally not rocket science. It usually only becomes a problem when it is done without preparation, without comparison values and with too many simultaneous changes. If you document your settings, use the right source and check specific things after flashing, you reduce the risk considerably.
