Bitaxe Copperzilla: open-source Bitcoin miner with solid copper cooling

The Bitaxe Copperzilla is technically a Bitaxe Gamma – same BM1370 ASIC, around 1.3 TH/s, roughly 15 W, about 15 J/TH, 0.91-inch OLED, AxeOS and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. The difference sits directly on the chip: instead of a standard heatsink it carries a massive solid copper block with the 40 mm PWM fan working over it. Copper takes heat away faster and buffers it rather than leaving it sitting on the ASIC.

Day to day that does not show up as a bigger number on the dashboard but as a calmer temperature: same clock, more distance to the ceiling, fewer reasons for the fan to spin up. Power draw is unchanged – roughly 15 W stays roughly 15 W, so about 11 kWh and around €3 a month at €0.28/kWh.

That composure is exactly the point when solo mining: the device is meant to run month after month without summer heat or a cramped spot slowing it down. Every hash it submits is a ticket on the next block – and that block currently pays 3.125 BTC plus every transaction fee in it, credited straight to the address stored in your AxeOS. None of that is plannable and it is not an income model; the tickets cost about €3 of electricity a month, and in between your miner confirms transactions and spreads the network hash rate across more shoulders.

Why the Copperzilla has more headroom than a standard Bitaxe

  • Solid copper instead of a standard heatsink: copper moves heat away from the BM1370 faster and keeps the ASIC temperature steadier even after hours under load.
  • Quieter at the same temperature: because the heatsink absorbs more heat, the 40 mm fan has to spin up less often to hold the same target.
  • Room to raise the clock: anyone touching frequency and voltage in AxeOS needs thermal headroom first – that is what the heatsink provides.
  • Otherwise unchanged: same firmware, same setup, same 5V/6A power supply as the entry model.

What the copper heatsink does – and what it does not

A better heatsink does not create hash rate. It makes sure the ASIC can hold the configured performance instead of throttling back as the temperature climbs. In a cool, airy room you will hardly see a difference to a well-placed standard device. In a warm attic, on a tight shelf or with a raised clock you notice it clearly.

Two things remain your job: clean airflow around the device and a stable power supply. When overclocking, the current demand rises before temperature becomes the problem – so the order is position, power supply, then clock.

All that copper makes the build heavier than a standard Bitaxe. On a solid surface with the stand that is irrelevant; on wobbly shelves or vertical mounts you should plan for it.

Up and running in minutes

Setup is no different from the other Bitaxe models: socket, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, browser. Have your pool details and Bitcoin address ready; the full walk-through is in the setup guide.

    Connect power

    Plug in the 5V/6A power supply. On first boot the Copperzilla opens its own Wi-Fi access point for configuration.

    Join your home network

    Connect to that network, select your own 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and enter the password. The OLED then shows the IP address on your network.

    Set pool and Bitcoin address

    Open AxeOS, enter pool, port, worker and your Bitcoin address, save and restart. After any reboot the miner reconnects with the stored settings.

Who the Bitaxe Copperzilla is for

For everyone planning the miner as a long-distance runner: around the clock in the homelab, in the office or in a room without air conditioning. For tinkerers who adjust frequency and voltage and need temperature headroom for it. And for anyone who simply wants the more solid piece of hardware on the desk, because they look at it every day.

The premium pays off less if your miner stands free in a cool room and runs at stock settings – then the Bitaxe Gamma does the same job. And if you are after more hash rate rather than better cooling, the route goes through more chips, not a bigger heatsink: the Bitaxe GT delivers around 2.15 TH/s at 43 W from two BM1370.

What you need to run it

Miner, 5V power supply, stand and quick start guide are included. You bring 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, a socket, pool details and your Bitcoin address. No PC or Raspberry Pi needed – AxeOS runs on the device itself.

For the heatsink to work it needs air: standing free, nothing right in front of the fan, no closed cabinet. If the location cannot be changed, airflow usually helps more than another component.

What is the difference between the Bitaxe Copperzilla and the Bitaxe Gamma?
Chip, hash rate and power draw are identical: BM1370, around 1.3 TH/s, roughly 15 W. The difference is the cooling – the Copperzilla carries a massive solid copper heatsink and therefore has more headroom under sustained load and when overclocking. It costs more than the Bitaxe Gamma in return; all variants side by side are on buy a Bitaxe.
Does the copper heatsink add hash rate?
Not by itself. The starting point stays around 1.3 TH/s. The heatsink keeps the ASIC from throttling as temperature rises and creates room if you deliberately raise the clock in AxeOS.
How much electricity does the Bitaxe Copperzilla use?
Around 15 W, so roughly 11 kWh a month. At an electricity price of €0.28/kWh that is about €3 a month, or roughly 10 cents a day. For a different tariff, the mining calculator gives you the matching figure.
How loud is the Bitaxe Copperzilla?
No dB figure is published for this model. Because the copper heatsink absorbs more heat, the 40 mm fan has to spin less for the same temperature – in normal operation it stays unobtrusive and becomes audible with aggressive settings. You define the fan curve yourself in AxeOS.
Is the Copperzilla heavier than a normal Bitaxe?
Yes, the solid copper adds noticeable weight; the data sheet does not give a figure. With the supplied stand on a firm surface that is uncritical, but plan for it with a wall or shelf mount.
Is more than 1.3 TH/s guaranteed?
No. Around 1.3 TH/s is the typical value at stock settings. Higher figures are possible in individual setups but depend on the specific ASIC, the power supply, airflow and room temperature – none of that is promised.
Is the Copperzilla suitable for 24/7 operation?
Yes, that is exactly what the stronger cooling is for. Give it a free-standing spot and glance at the ASIC temperature in AxeOS now and then; the dashboard shows the values live.
Do I need a stronger power supply for the Copperzilla?
No, the supplied 5V/6A power supply rated at 30 W is enough for normal operation. Only when you overclock does the quality of the power supply become the limiting factor.
What is the difference between the Copperzilla and the Bitaxe GT?
The Copperzilla improves the cooling of a single-chip miner, while the Bitaxe GT doubles the chips: 2.15 TH/s at 43 W instead of 1.3 TH/s at 15 W. More cooling means stability, more chips mean more hash rate – and around €8.70 instead of €3 of electricity a month. Per terahash the Copperzilla stays more frugal: roughly 15 against 20 J/TH.
Can I solo mine with the Copperzilla?
Yes. In AxeOS you enter a solo pool or a public pool along with your own Bitcoin address. On a block find the full 3.125 BTC plus fees go to you, but the probability stays very small – solo mining is a lottery.
Does the Copperzilla work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
No, its Wi-Fi only works on 2.4 GHz. If your router combines both bands under one name, setup usually only succeeds once you give the 2.4 GHz network its own name.
