Do you want to set up your Bitaxe Gamma 601 and see as quickly as possible whether the miner is running cleanly? Then this guide is for you. Here you get a precise step-by-step guide from unpacking through Wi-Fi and AxeOS to the pool, the wallet address, monitoring, temperature, common mistakes and sensible next steps.

  1. Place the Bitaxe Gamma 601, connect the power supply and wait until the display and fan start.

What is the Bitaxe Gamma 601?

The Bitaxe Gamma 601 is a compact open-source Bitcoin miner for home. It works with a BM1370 ASIC, connects to your network over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and is configured through AxeOS in the browser. A target performance of around 1.3 TH/s is typical. The exact figure always depends on firmware, cooling, ambient temperature, power supply and settings.

What matters: the Bitaxe Gamma 601 is not a large industrial ASIC miner but a home mining device. It is meant to make Bitcoin mining tangible, to build up your own setup knowledge and to try solo mining or pool mining at home in practice. Preparation: what you need before you start

Get everything ready before you start. That avoids most setup mistakes.

  • the Bitaxe Gamma 601 including the stand and the supplied power supply
  • a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network whose name and password you know
  • an on-chain Bitcoin address, not a Lightning address
  • a smartphone, tablet or laptop for the first Wi-Fi setup
  • some space around the miner so air can flow in and out cleanly
  • optional: access to your router in case you want to look up the IP address there later

The most important point about Wi-Fi: the Bitaxe Gamma 601 uses 2.4 GHz. Many modern routers broadcast 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under the same network name. That often works, but it can cause problems with IoT devices. If your Bitaxe does not build a stable connection, a dedicated 2.4 GHz network or a separately named 2.4 GHz band is usually the cleanest solution.

Step 1: place the Bitaxe Gamma 601 properly

Put the Bitaxe Gamma 601 on a firm, level surface. Ideally in a spot with clean airflow, not right next to a radiator, not in a closed cabinet and not on soft surfaces such as fabric, carpet or packaging material. The miner needs air so that the ASIC, the voltage regulators and the heatsink keep working stably.

Keep at least a few centimetres clear at the intake and the exhaust. If you run the miner on a shelf, make sure warm air is not drawn straight back in. Placement matters more than many beginners think. Unstable hash rate, a high hash rate error or excessive temperature often come not from a „broken device“ but from poor airflow.

Step 2: connect the power supply

Use the supplied power supply for the initial setup. With the Bitaxe Gamma 601 the matching power supply is part of the normal scope of delivery at Bitaxe.de. First plug the round DC connector into the device properly, then plug the power supply into the socket.

After connecting, the fan and the display should start. That can take a few seconds. The display normally shows a Wi-Fi name in the pattern Bitaxe_XXXX. That is exactly the network you need for the initial setup.

If nothing happens at all, first check the socket, the power supply plug and how firmly the DC connector is seated. Do not force it, do not pull on the cable, and do not try other power supplies if the voltage or the connector do not clearly match. Step 3: connect to the Bitaxe Wi-Fi

Open the Wi-Fi list on your smartphone, tablet or laptop. A network like Bitaxe_XXXX should appear there. Connect to it. At the beginning the Bitaxe provides its own access point so you can give it your real Wi-Fi credentials.

After connecting, a setup portal often opens automatically. If it does not, open a browser and go to this address:

http://192.168.4.1

That is the local setup address of the Bitaxe in configuration mode. If the page does not load, check that your device is really still connected to Bitaxe_XXXX. Some smartphones switch back to the normal Wi-Fi or to mobile data automatically once they notice that the Bitaxe network has no internet access. In that case briefly disable mobile data or select the Wi-Fi connection again.

Step 4: enter your home Wi-Fi

In the setup portal you now enter your home Wi-Fi. Watch these points:

  • Use a 2.4 GHz network only.
  • Select or type the SSID exactly.
  • Enter the Wi-Fi password without leading or trailing spaces.
  • Check especially carefully if the password contains special characters.
  • If possible, make the password visible with the eye icon and check it.

Save the Wi-Fi credentials with Save and then restart the Bitaxe with Restart. The miner then shuts down its own setup network and tries to connect to your home network.

After the restart the display normally shows the new IP address on your home network, for example:

http://192.168.20.122

The specific address differs on every network. All that matters is this: you need that IP address to open AxeOS in the browser.

Step 5: open the AxeOS dashboard

Open the IP address shown on the display of the Bitaxe Gamma 601 in your browser. You should land in the AxeOS dashboard. AxeOS is the web interface of your miner. This is where you will later see hash rate, temperature, shares, the pool connection and the settings.

When you see AxeOS for the first time, concentrate on the areas that really matter:

  • Hash rate: shows whether the miner is working.
  • Accepted shares: shows whether the pool is accepting valid work.
  • Rejected shares: should stay low.
  • Temperature: should stay stable and sensible.
  • Pool status: shows whether the connection to the pool is up.
  • Uptime: helps you see whether the miner is restarting or running stably.

Step 6: choose a mining pool

Before your Bitaxe Gamma 601 really mines, it needs pool details. The pool is the server your miner works with. With small home miners the choice of pool matters especially, because not every pool makes equal sense for a very small hash rate.

For the start, a simple configuration with an established pool makes sense. Many Bitaxe users use public-pool.io for solo mining setups. Step 7: enter the pool settings correctly

Open the pool settings in AxeOS. There you enter the details your Bitaxe Gamma 601 needs to connect to the pool.

The user field needs particular care. Many pools expect your Bitcoin address as the user. If you use several miners, you can often append a worker name directly, for example:

The Bitcoin address stays the important part. The worker suffix after the dot only helps with the display in the pool. Do not use an exchange address if you are not sure whether it is suitable for mining payouts. The cleanest option is a Bitcoin address from a wallet whose keys you control yourself.

Step 8: save and restart the miner

Once you have entered the host, port, user and password, save the settings with Save. Then restart the miner with Restart. That matters, because the Bitaxe only picks up the new pool details cleanly after a restart.

After the restart it takes a moment before Wi-Fi, the pool connection and the hash rate become visible. Do not judge the miner by the first ten seconds. Wait a few minutes and then watch the values in the dashboard.

Step 9: check that the Bitaxe Gamma 601 really is mining

A common mistake is to look only at the hash rate. A visible hash rate is good, but on its own it does not prove that your setup is running completely correctly. What matters is that the pool accepts valid shares.

Check these values after the start:

  • Hash rate: it should rise after a short time and settle.
  • Accepted shares: this figure should rise over time.
  • Rejected shares: individual rejects can happen; permanently high rejects are a warning sign.
  • Temperature: the miner should not run too hot permanently.
  • Pool connection: the pool should be connected and delivering work.

Setting up the Bitaxe Gamma 601: the values to check after the start

When you set up the Bitaxe Gamma 601, the order of checks after the first start is decisive. Do not only check whether the dashboard is reachable. Check whether the miner is really working, whether the pool accepts work and whether the device stays stable.

The best first check is simple: after the setup, leave the miner alone for at least 30 to 60 minutes. During that time do not change clock values, voltage or pool details unless you are deliberately hunting a fault. That is how you find out whether the basic configuration is stable.

What is normal after the setup?

After the initial setup it is normal for the values not to look perfect straight away. The hash rate fluctuates briefly, the temperature rises first and then settles, and the pool needs a little time before shares become visible. What matters is the trend over several minutes, not a single momentary value.

With the Bitaxe Gamma 601 you should pay particular attention to stability. A stable miner with a slightly lower hash rate is better than an aggressively configured one that runs hot, produces many errors or restarts regularly.

Router check: when the setup fails on the network

Many problems when setting up a Bitaxe are really router or Wi-Fi problems. The miner can only work stably if it has a clean, permanent connection to the network and to the pool.

  • 2.4 GHz active: check whether your router broadcasts a 2.4 GHz network at all.
  • Unambiguous Wi-Fi name: if possible, separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz into two names.
  • Signal strength: for a test, put the miner closer to the router.
  • Special characters in the password: if there are problems, try a simpler 2.4 GHz guest network.
  • Client isolation: on guest networks devices sometimes cannot see each other. Then you may not find AxeOS from your laptop.
  • Firewall / parental controls: outgoing pool connections must not be blocked.
  • DNS: if host names are not resolved, check the router DNS or use a reliable DNS resolver for a test.

If AxeOS is reachable but no shares arrive, the Wi-Fi is not automatically to blame. In that case the fault often lies with the pool host, the port, the user field, router rules or the pool being unreachable.

Reading pool examples correctly

Many beginners copy pool details incorrectly, because pool websites use different notations. Pay attention to what belongs in which field.

If your pool explicitly requires a different format, always follow the pool documentation. What matters is that you do not mix host, port, user and password into a single field when AxeOS offers separate ones.

Common mistakes when setting up the Bitaxe Gamma 601

1. The wrong Wi-Fi or 5 GHz problems

The most common mistake is Wi-Fi. The Bitaxe needs 2.4 GHz. If your router uses band steering or combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under the same name, it can work – but it does not have to. If there are problems, set up a separate 2.4 GHz network or use a 2.4 GHz guest network.

2. The setup portal does not open

If the portal does not appear automatically, go to http://192.168.4.1 directly in the browser. Also check that your phone has not switched to mobile data or back to your normal Wi-Fi.

3. The wrong Bitcoin address

Do not use a Lightning address. Enter a normal on-chain Bitcoin address. Copy it carefully and check the beginning and the end. Spaces before or after the address can cause problems.

4. The stratum host entered incorrectly

When AxeOS expects a host field, you normally enter only the host, for example public-pool.io, not a full web address with https://. The port goes in the separate port field.

5. Saving without restarting

After changing Wi-Fi or pool settings, always save and then restart. Otherwise you may wonder why AxeOS shows values while the miner is still working with the old settings.

6. Thinking about overclocking too early

When the Bitaxe is connected to Wi-Fi but does not mine

This state is particularly common: the miner is reachable on the network, AxeOS opens, but no accepted shares arrive. Then Wi-Fi is no longer the first suspect. Check in this order:

  1. Is the stratum host correct?
  2. Is the port correct?
  3. Is the Bitcoin address correct?
  4. Is the pool reachable?
  5. Is the router blocking outgoing connections?
  6. Does AxeOS show error messages or reconnects?
  7. Is the temperature rising fast or is the miner restarting?

Firmware: do I need an AxeOS update straight away?

Not necessarily. If your Bitaxe Gamma 601 starts cleanly, connects to Wi-Fi, reaches the pool and mines stably, you do not have to force a firmware update on day one. An update makes sense when you want to fix a specific problem, need new features or a known improvement is included in a new version.

Sensible next steps after the setup

Once your Bitaxe Gamma 601 runs stably, you can improve your setup step by step. The important thing is not to change everything at once. One change at a time makes it far easier to spot faults.

1. Understand your power consumption

2. Optimise cooling and noise

If the miner lives permanently in a living space, airflow and the choice of fan can matter. 3. Build your own node and public pool

Can I overclock the Bitaxe Gamma 601?
