Copper heatsinks: cooling for the spots next to the ASIC

In home mining everyone watches the ASIC temperature – after all, it is the one on the dashboard. But an open board also gets warm elsewhere, above all at the voltage regulators that supply the chip. That is exactly where these small copper heatsinks come in.

Copper picks up the heat at the contact surface, spreads it across the fins and passes it to the air your fan is pushing over the board anyway. A point that heats up becomes an area that cools down – the cheapest adjustment in the setup.

Why heatsinks on the voltage regulators pay off

  • Collect heat where it is created: the components next to the ASIC often have no cooling surface of their own as delivered.
  • More even temperatures: buyers report that heat spreads better across the board after fitting them.
  • Useful when overclocking: higher voltage means more losses at the regulators.
  • The smallest upgrade: no rebuild, no new fan, no change in height.

A complement, not a replacement

Here is the honest limit: these heatsinks replace neither the fan nor the cooling on the ASIC. Without airflow over the board they achieve little, because the absorbed heat has to be carried away. They are the last percent on top – if the ASIC temperature is the problem, you need a bigger main heatsink.

Compatibility: Bitaxe and NerdQaxe setups

Because the heatsinks are seated rather than screwed down, they are not tied to a mounting pattern. They are intended for Bitaxe boards and compatible NerdQaxe setups – including devices such as the NerdQaxe++, which the large cooling kits do not fit. Putting those boards into operation is described in the NerdQaxe setup guide.

Who the copper heatsinks are for

For everyone who has their setup under control and wants the last few degrees: overclockers, 24/7 users and tinkerers who look closely at where their board gets warm.

If you are just starting out, this is the wrong place to start: a better main heatsink such as the ICE Tower Kit does far more.

What you need to fit them

Very little: switch the miner off, clean the target surface so it is free of grease, and seat the heatsink straight without tilting it. Buyers report the job is done in a few minutes. Make sure nothing touches neighbouring components and the airflow stays clear.

Accessories and sensible upgrades

Ready to squeeze out the last few degrees?

If your miner runs, the main heatsink fits and you still want to operate your board more calmly, the copper heatsinks are the smallest sensible step – quickly fitted and reversible at any time.

Frequently asked questions about the Kupfer Kühlkörper

Do the copper heatsinks fit the Bitaxe Gamma?
Yes. They are seated on the components and intended for Bitaxe boards, including the Bitaxe Gamma. Just make sure there is enough free surface at the spot you have in mind.
Do they fit NerdQaxe boards as well?
Yes, they are designed for compatible NerdQaxe setups. That makes them one of the few cooling additions that also work for the NerdQaxe++ – the large ICE Tower kits do not fit there.
Do the heatsinks replace the cooler on the ASIC?
No. They are a complement for voltage regulators and other hotspots. The ASIC still needs its own heatsink.
Do they replace the fan?
No. Without airflow over the board they achieve very little, because the absorbed heat has to be carried away.
Are such small parts worth it?
If you overclock or your board runs under permanent load: yes. It is the cheapest cooling upgrade in the range. If your miner stays cool at factory settings, it is not necessary.
Where do the heatsinks go on the board?
On the components that get hottest under load – usually the voltage regulators next to the ASIC. Run the miner under load once and see where it gets warm.
How long does fitting take?
A few minutes. Most of it goes into cleaning the surface; after that you seat the heatsink straight and without tilting.
Can I use them together with a large heatsink?
Yes, that is exactly what they are for. They sit next to the main heatsink on the board and do not interfere with it as long as nothing collides.
What is the difference to the ICE Tower Kit?
The ICE Tower Kit replaces the main heatsink on the ASIC including the fan. The copper heatsinks take care of the remaining hotspots – one does not replace the other.
What is the difference to the AXP60 Copperzilla?
The AXP60 Copperzilla is a heatsink with 210 g of copper and a fan for the ASIC on Gamma boards. These heatsinks are the small counterpart for the rest of the board and fit more models.
Can I remove the heatsinks again?
Yes. They are seated, not screwed or soldered – removal is possible if you pass the board on or rebuild it.
Do they bring more hash rate?
No, not on their own. They create thermal headroom; whether you turn that headroom into higher frequencies is up to your miner settings.
