Buy a Bitaxe: open-source Bitcoin miners for solo mining at home

Four Bitaxe models, plus Nerdaxe and NerdQaxe: the differences are in hash rate, power draw, cooling and noise – not in the returns. This page sorts out which device fits your home, what running it really costs per month and what a solo miner can actually do.

The short answer: for getting started, the Bitaxe Gamma 601 is the right device – 1.3 TH/s at around 15 W and under 15 dB(A). More hash rate with the same handling comes from the Bitaxe GT (2.15 TH/s) and the Bitaxe 702 (4.2 TH/s). If you want copper cooling and 24/7 operation, take the Copperzilla.

Which Bitaxe suits you?

Most people decide on hash rate first – and are annoyed by fan noise or waste heat later. The sensible order is the other way round: first work out where the device will stand, then power draw and noise, then compute. A miner that is a nuisance in your study ends up not running at all.

  • First miner, has to be quiet in a living space: Bitaxe Gamma 601 – one BM1370 ASIC, around 15 W, under 15 dB(A), running from a 5 V power supply.
  • More hash rate, same handling: Bitaxe GT with two ASICs, 2.15 TH/s at 43 W.
  • Maximum performance in a single Bitaxe: Bitaxe 702 with six BM1368, 4.2 TH/s at roughly 90 W – that one needs air around it.
  • Copper heatsink and continuous operation: Bitaxe Copperzilla – same performance class as the Gamma but built for low temperatures.
  • Large display, own board design: Nerdaxe Gamma, or with the newer BM1373 chip the Nerdaxe Gaia – at around 10 J/TH the most efficient device in the range.
  • Considerably more compute: NerdQaxe++ (4.8 TH/s) or NerdOctaxe (12 TH/s) – another league in power draw, heat and noise.

Efficiency in joules per terahash tells you how much electricity a device needs for the same work – lower is better. Between 10 and 21 J/TH there is roughly a factor of two in monthly electricity cost per terahash.

What a Bitaxe actually does

A Bitaxe is a full Bitcoin miner in miniature: it builds block candidates, computes SHA-256 and submits valid solutions to a pool or – when solo mining – to your own node. Technically it does the same as a machine in a data centre, just with a tiny share of the world’s computing power.

When solo mining that means: every attempt is its own lottery ticket. If your device finds a block, the entire reward of currently 3.125 BTC plus transaction fees goes to you – not a share of it, all of it. The probability is very small, and it does not grow because the device has been running for a long time. How small it is with your model is calculated by the mining calculator using current network data.

If you prefer small predictable amounts, run the miner in a pool and receive your share of every block the pool finds. Both work with the same hardware; switching takes less than a minute in the AxeOS firmware. More on that in our solo mining guide.

Noise, heat and the right spot

The Gamma stays below 15 dB(A), under what is even noticeable in a quiet room – it may sit on your desk. From the GT upwards more heat has to leave the board and the fan becomes audible; from the 702 and the NerdQaxe models the device belongs on a shelf, in a hallway or in a homelab.

Heat is not a side effect but the main output: a device drawing 90 watts puts 90 watts of heating into the room. Pleasant in winter, an argument for a cooler spot in summer. If you want it quieter or cooler, the shop has matching heatsinks and fans as well as upgrades.

What you need besides the miner

  • Power supply: Gamma, Copperzilla and Nerdaxe Gamma run on 5 V / 6 A (30 W), the GT on 12 V / 5 A, the 702 and the NerdQaxe models on 12 V / 10 A. Depending on the model a suitable supply is included or available in accessories.
  • Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz: the ESP32-S3 on board does not connect to 5 GHz-only networks. On modern routers it usually helps to separate the bands briefly.
  • A target for the work: either a pool account or – for real solo mining – your own Bitcoin node.
  • Optional: a mount or case so the device stands cleanly, plus a spare display or an extra fan for continuous operation.

Bitaxe, Nerdaxe or NerdQaxe?

All three come from the same open-source project and run AxeOS. The Bitaxe is the original and the leanest build. The Nerdaxe models use their own board with a large display – same technology, different looks. NerdQaxe and NerdOctaxe stack four or eight ASICs on one board and deliver a multiple of the hash rate, but need a power supply, cooling and space of a different class.

In short

If you want to buy a Bitaxe and are still undecided: take the Gamma 601. It is quiet enough for any room, costs about €3 of electricity a month and technically does everything the larger models do. If you want more hash rate with the same handling, the GT is the next step and the 702 the top of the single-device range. And if you are planning a jump into another performance class, you end up at NerdQaxe++ or NerdOctaxe.

What does a Bitaxe cost?
The Bitaxe Gamma 601 is the most affordable model, and the range goes up to the NerdOctaxe devices. Current prices are on the product cards above – we deliberately do not put amounts in the text so that nothing here is ever out of date.
How much electricity does a Bitaxe use per month?
A Gamma or Copperzilla draws around 15 watts, which is roughly 11 kWh or about €3 a month at €0.28/kWh in continuous operation. The GT sits at 43 watts (about €9), the Bitaxe 702 at roughly 90 watts (about €18). Use the mining calculator for your own electricity price.
How loud is a Bitaxe?
The Bitaxe Gamma 601 stays under 15 dB(A) and is practically inaudible in a normal room. Models with more performance move more heat and are audible accordingly – from the Bitaxe 702 and the NerdQaxe models upwards, pick a spot where a running fan does not bother anyone.
Bitaxe Gamma or Bitaxe GT – which is better?
The GT computes about 65 % faster at 2.15 TH/s but needs almost three times the power (43 instead of 15 watts) and a 12 V supply. For a first miner, for quiet placement and for the cheapest operation the Gamma is the better choice; if you deliberately want more hash rate, take the GT.
Is a Bitaxe financially worthwhile?
Not as an investment. A Bitaxe earns only tiny amounts in a pool, and solo mining offers a very small chance of a block. The point is to help secure the network yourself, understand the technology and work independently of service providers – anyone looking for a return is in the wrong place with hardware this size.
Can you really find a block with a Bitaxe?
Yes, it is possible: in solo mining every valid hash counts, and a find brings the full block reward of currently 3.125 BTC plus fees. Such finds have happened with very small miners. It is not likely – the chance over a given period is calculated by the mining calculator from the current network difficulty.
Do I need my own Bitcoin node for a Bitaxe?
Not for pool mining – Wi-Fi and a pool account are enough. For real solo mining, where you build your own block templates, you need your own node. Suitable devices are in the Bitcoin node category; alternatively there are solo pools that work without one.
Which power supply does a Bitaxe need?
Gamma, Copperzilla and Nerdaxe Gamma run on 5 V / 6 A (30 W), the Bitaxe GT on 12 V / 5 A (60 W), and the Bitaxe 702 and NerdQaxe models on 12 V / 10 A (120 W). A supply that is too weak is the most common cause of restarts under load – better to use the one specified.
How do I set up a Bitaxe?

What is the difference between Bitaxe and Nerdaxe?
The technology is the same – same ASIC, same AxeOS firmware. The Nerdaxe models use their own board design with a large display, which makes them feel more like a display piece. The Nerdaxe Gaia goes further technically: with the BM1373 it delivers 2.6 TH/s at around 10 J/TH.
Can I run a Bitaxe in a pool instead of solo?
Yes, at any time: in AxeOS you simply enter a different pool address and restart. In a pool you receive small regular shares, solo the tiny chance of a whole block. Same hardware, different setting.
